The foundation of Sree Sarada Ashrama Balika Bidyalaya is deeply connected to the divine blessings and ideals of Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi. Among her devoted direct disciples, Mira Debi and Bani Debi played an extraordinary role in turning the Mother’s vision into a reality. They were spiritual seekers of great purity, courage and determination, entirely devoted to the Holy Mother and guided by her divine ideals.
Sri Sarada Devi believed with conviction that the upliftment of society must begin with the upliftment of women. To her, education was the key to self-respect, independence, and true realization of one’s inner strength. She encouraged her disciples to create institutions that would support distressed women and empower young girls to grow through knowledge, values, and service.
Inspired by this divine guidance, Mira Debi and Bani Debi founded Sree Sarada Ashrama at 80/1A, Lansdowne Road, Kolkata. The Ashrama began its journey with the mission of providing education, cultural development, social welfare, and spiritual enrichment for women and children. Religion and moral values were placed at the heart of every initiative — shaping lives with compassion and devotion.
A new milestone was achieved in 1956, when through immense faith, effort, and limited resources, they managed to acquire a plot of land at New Alipore, Block ‘O’ — a quiet and promising location for the school they envisioned. After tireless efforts and support from well-wishers, construction of a school building began — brick by brick, prayer by prayer.
On 20th February, the sacred birthday of Sri Ramakrishna, a historic moment unfolded — the first entrance ceremony into the newly built school structure was performed with holy rituals and joy. This marked the divine beginning of Sree Sarada Ashrama Balika Bidyalaya.
What began with just 45 young students soon blossomed into a thriving institution. Like a small plant nurtured with love and sacrifice, the school gradually transformed into a flourishing tree — spreading the fragrance of wisdom, values, and empowerment across generations of girls.
The school continues to uphold the noble ideals of Holy Mother — combining education with spiritual growth and character development. The lives of countless students who have studied here remain a glowing testimony to the tireless dedication, vision, and devotion of Mira Debi and Bani Debi — the blessed disciples who gave their all for the cause of girls’ education.
